Heraldic surround

By drawing half of the imagery I could use the mirror to reflect, thus creating a whole depiction. I feel the swirls and curves that were investigated prior help significantly.

Whilst browsing the net I was suddenly drawn to my Lava Lamp. Oozing, pulsating and dancing spheres and drips gave me the idea to reproduce these engaging shapes within my lion image.So I began to recreate these shapes by using Lino cuttings once more. More Images to be added.

Heraldry

After careful consideration and further contextual research I came across 'Tres Logos', a book that shed a huge amount of light upon a difficult situation. When browsing I came across a number of Logos that were based upon traditional heraldic coats of arms. This interested me greatly for a number of reasons. The simplicity of imagery incorporates essential items that reflect the representative yet does not over complicate the illustration, which I feel is key in conveyance for Big Bud. The image shall be large scale therfore simplicity allows for further working and detailing. I also am drawn to the hiearchy associated with heraldry, DJ Big Bud is 'royalty' in the Drum and Bass world and I feel creating a heraldic image has more body for further production, such as ; Branding, posters, cd covers and other promotional items.

Records

Trawling through my dad's vinyl collection for inspiration and I found a few examples of what I wanted to embody within my own piece. The photos of the vinyl represent all the key elements I want: Simplicity, vibrancy and power.
I wanted to see what type of effect could be achieved with the grain of the print and whether this could aid in the design. So, I went to LCC and used the large Ink press to create a number of different ideas.

Mighty Lion

Over the past week I have dedicated my time to the production period. After my inspiring trip to the Zoo, I felt the incorporation of the mighty lion would not only add to the religious heritage of the Rasta movement but it also symbolizes the power and strength of the music of Big Bud. I began with initial sketches to get a general idea of the style of imagery, and as I wanted to focus upon traditional styling I chose to keep the imagery very linear, very blocky and simple. To aid in the symmetry I began sketching the lions on graph paper until I was happy with styling.

Although extremely beautiful the lions and tigers only came out twice in my 45 minute visit, these are the best references recorded.
